"CHICHESTER" No.1

Hundred of Manhood & Selsey Tramways

7mm (O) 1:43.5

This model is the later version, running as an 0-4-2ST

This locomotive was the first of two to run on the selsey Tramway under the name of "Chichester". As an 0-6-0ST she was used as the construction locomotive in 1897. There are pictures of her being pulled along the road by a traction engine! She was kept at Selsey ostensibly as the goods engine whence she was converted into the 0-4-2ST, the subject of this kit.

Over the years there has been discussion as to who was the actual builder. For many years it was believed that it was Messrs. Longbottom of Barnsley, but it is now quite well established that in fact she was built in 1865 by Messrs Dodds of Rotherham as an open cab contractor's locomotive. Messrs. Benton & Woodiwiss were the cusotmers, who used her during the building of the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway.

Prior to delivery to Selsey, a standard cab and fittings were installed by Messrs. Peckett & Co., of Bristol and within a short time at Selsey she was converted to the 0-4-2ST. She was numbered "1" on the front buffer beam and the name "Chichester" was painted on the tank side. She is believed to have carried an unlined blue livery, and her demise was the usual breaking up for scrap (in 1913) after lying derelict for some time

The kit:

The kit will be a fully integrated kit, though as yet only basic design work and scratch test building is taking place.

The 7mm version will be as complete as possible per our usual specification and it will be a mixture of etched brass, nickel silver, possibly a white metal boiler and brass and whitemetal fittings. It is planned to give motorising details.

The kit per our usual will include transfers and we plan to produce the correct T-section, 11 spoke, 3'6" diameter wheels. (In fact this is already well in hand).

Production of a complete 4mm version is most unlikely due to market considerations, but 4mm etches may well be available.

Test building has commenced, click on this link to see photos of the 7mm test build.
